Colorism 1Chantel UtleyUnfortunalty colorism affects African Americans as well as other races. We are a people of beauty... and I could reallystop there but I'll continue. We are a people of such beauty we are often mimicked; our hair texture, our bold features and countless shades of brown are desired by many. Colorism plays into that because even though they mimic us we still give a false notion that we do not love ourselves, and some don't. It's taken my dad reminding me that I am worth more than rubies and my mom to constantly point out my unique features, for me to realize they were blessings and not flaws. My parents worked on me from the inside out so I could understand what true beauty is.So of course every now and then I compare myself to someone whom may have features that are more prominent in the media; lighter skin; longer hair, colored eyes; but I don't have those features. I like me and it took me a very, very long time to like me and the skin I'm in. So now I complement my brown sisters. If we lifted each other more instead of envy others we'd be much further, and ultimately we'd all understand that we truly are a people of beauty.
